Chinese Classes

Huaxia offers quality Chinese Classes with experienced teachers from grades K-7 plus AP Chinese and a spoken Chinese class. Classes are taught in an immersion-style setting in which the teacher communicates solely in Chinese. Mandarin Classes are two hours long with a short break in between. The class material typically consists of stories or articles in written Chinese or Pinyin to develop vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. Teachers have their students read aloud the text and possibly act it out to establish proper Mandarin pronounciation. The curriculum may also feature spoken activities in order to evolve students' speaking and listening skills. It is also likely for teachers to incorporate fun cultural activities to their own discretion. At the end of each semester each Chinese Class will prepare an extra-cirricular performance. There will be a Lunar New Year celebration at the conclusion of the first semester where students may prepare an enactment, a song, a poem, a skit, (etc). The culmination of the second semester and school year will be marked by a speech competition, in which students rehearse and orate a narrative, informative speech, humorous prose, theatrical performance, (etc) in Mandarin.

AP Chinese

After completion of K-7 Chinese or proficient fluency in the Chinese language, students are eligible to take the AP Chinese Class. This class will be taught in much the same manner as the regular K-7 classes, though it will prepare students for the AP test and will thus focus heavily on culture and speaking/listening/reading/writing fluencies. The AP class functions as a higher-level Chinese class and can be taken even if a student does not want to take the AP Chinese test. The AP Chinese class will participate in the same activities as the normal K-7 classes such as the Lunar New Year performance and the speech competition.

Spoken Chinese

The Spoken Chinese Class is as the name implies; it does not include reading nor writing in the curriculum and instead focuses on speaking and listening skills. This class is a good choice for any student seeking an introductory course to Chinese. In this class, students will learn basic phrases and voabulary to be used in daily conversation.
